Ring Size Guide

Accuracy:

Good — within half a size

Takes:

2 minutes

1. Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 100 mm long, or take a length of non-stretch string.
2. Wrap it around the base of the finger, then slide it over the knuckle — it has to pass without forcing.
3. Settle it back at the base and mark where the strip overlaps itself.
4. Lay it flat and measure from the end to the mark in millimetres. That is your inner circumference.
5. Read the circumference column in the chart below, or enter the number in the converter above.

Use paper or string that does not stretch. Elastic and thread will read a size small.

Takes:

1. Pick a ring that fits the intended finger comfortably — not one that spins, not one you struggle to remove.
2. Lay it flat and measure the inside of the band, edge to edge across the widest point, in millimetres.
3. That is the inner diameter. Match it to the diameter column below.
4. Note the band's width while you are there — a wide band on the reference ring means it was already sized up.

Measure the inside of the band, never the outside. The metal's thickness is not part of the size.

Takes:

Same day

1. A plastic sizer belt costs very little and reads the size directly off a scale, the way a jeweller's set does.
2. Slide it on, tighten until snug, then work it over the knuckle to confirm it clears.
3. Take the reading at the base of the finger, not at the knuckle.
4. Check it twice at different times of day and take the larger reading.

1. Any local jeweller will size your finger on a steel mandrel in under a minute, usually for free.
2. Ask them for the US size, and for the circumference in millimetres as a cross-check.
3. Mention the band width you are considering — sizing advice changes above 6 mm.
